Key Verse

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

John 10:27
  1. Confirm your relationship.
  2. Reorder your desires.
  3. Incline your ear.
  4. Obey His voice.
        1. Confirm your relationship.

Who can hear the voice of God? Those who are of God – believers – can hear God’s voice.

        • John 8:47 – He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.
        • 1 Corinthians 2:14 – But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

How can I be sure I’m a true believer? True believers believe the truth about Jesus (1 John 5:10-13).

Jesus is the Son of God who came to earth in the flesh to pay the sin penalty each of us owes .

        • Jesus is the only way we can have a relationship with God
        • True believers desire to live righteously (1 John 3)
        • True believers love other believers (1 John 4)
        1. Reorder your desires.

Our own voices get in the way of God’s voice. It’s easy to convince ourselves that it’s “God’s will” to do something that we want to do in our own selfishness.

How can I reorder my desires? We must know what our selfish desires are; ask God to search our hearts and reveal to us our selfish desires (Psalm 139:23-34).

        • What do I desire so much that I’m willing to sin for it? (James 4:1-3).
        • In humility, we must confess our selfish desires to God (James 4:4-9).
        • In relationship, we must reorder our desires to be in subjection to God’s desires (James 4:10, 13-15).
        1. Incline your ear.
        • Humble heart
        • Obedience to what you already know God says to do/not do (James 1:22-25 be a doer of the word)
        • Submitting our will to His
        • Submitting our strength to His
        • Submitting our wisdom and logic to His
        • Listening ear
        • James 1:19 – quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath
        • 1 Samuel 3:10 – Speak, for your servant hears
        • Bible reading
        • God’s primary method of speaking to us; the Holy Spirit enlightens us to truth in God’s Word (Psalm 119:105, Hebrews 4:12)
        • We must know the truths of God’s Word – Prov 3:5-6
        • We must seek the truths of God’s Word – Prov 2:1-7
        • Prayer
        • We are commanded to ask God for wisdom – James 1:5-8
        • We need God’s wisdom in the routine decisions as well as the big ones (relationships, financial decisions, etc.)
        • Fellowship with followers of God
        • God instituted the church – the family of God – to encourage each other, hold each other accountable, and love one another
        • Seek godly counsel and compare it with God’s Word
        1. Obey His voice.
